The world of music has changed a lot. Once upon a time, people used to buy records. Believe or not, Spotify was not yet created and Youtube was not the way to watch videos. Even weirder, people also used to buy movie soundtracks.
These are the best-selling movie soundracks of all time in the US ranked by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of Americas).
5- Dirty Dancing 1987
Around 11 million copies sold of this movie starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray and directed by Emile Ardolino. It was a low budget movie but it became a massive box office hit. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video. The soundrack was created by Jimmy Leaner and won the Golden Globen and the Academy Award for Best original Song. The most famous songs are: “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” and “She’s Like The Wind”
“Forrest Gump” — Various Artists
12 million copies sold of this soundtrack. The movie was released in 1994. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise and Sally Field. The music of the soundrack was used to pinpoint time periods portrayed on screen. Some notable songs are “Hound Dog”, “Respect”, “Sweet Home Alabama”… Music by Elvis Presley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aretha Franklin, The Doors among others.
“Purple Rain” (1984) — Prince
More than 13 million copies sold of this movie directed by Albert Magnoli The film stars Prince in his acting debut playing “The Kid. If you like Prince, this is your movie and your soundtrack. “When doves Cry”, “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain” are the most famous song of this rock musical drama film.
“Saturday Night Fever” (1977) — The Bee Gees
Travolta and the Gibb brothers in this American film directed by John Badham. Travolta is Tony Manero, a young man who loves dancing. The soundtrack sold 15 million copies and featured disco songs by the Bee Gees. We all remember “Staying’Alive” and “How Deep is your Love”, don’t we?
“The Bodyguard” — Whitney Houston
More than 17 copies sold of the soundtrack by Whitney Houston. The Bodyguard is a 1992 American romantic film starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. A former secret service agent is the bodyguard hired to protect a music star. It was Houston’s acting debut and sold more than 45 million copies worldwide. “I will always love you” was the most famous song of this soundtrack.
