One of the musical movies we all remember when we think about this genre might be Grease, or Dirty Dancing… maybe Chicago, and more recently La La Land. These movies are great but we will talk about some of the classic movies.

The Wizard of Oz

Released in 1939 it was produced by Metro Goldwin Mayer based on the novel by L. Frank Baum. Starred by Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, it was nominateed for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.  Gone with the Wind won the award though. Over the rainbow won the Best Original Song academy Award.

Singing in the rain

Stanley Donen directed this movie in 1952. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds played the main characters of this movie which offers a view of the history of Hollywood in the transition from silent movies to “talkies”. The song Singing in the Rain is not original for this movie, and have been featured in some other films.

West Side Story

We are in the early 1960s and this movies shows a modern Romeo and Juliet in New York. Two gangs battle to control the upper west side. Love does not understand about gangs and one of the members falls in love with a rival’s sister. It stars Natalia Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris.

Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is a magical nanny taking care of Jane and Michael, children living in London. Robert Stevenson directed the movie and starring Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber. The film, which combines animation and live-action was shot a the Disney studios in Burbank and the London background scenes were just paintings. Mary Poppins won five Oscars, Best actress for Julie Andres, best film editing, best original music score, visual effects and best original song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee”.

The sound of music

Based on the real life story of the Von Trapp family. This family of singers were on the world’s best known groups before World War II. A governess arrives to the Von Trapp house to take care of the captain’s seven children. Love, songs, music and this movie produced and directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
